Last year, we got an inquiry for a wedding taking place at one of my favorite spots in the world – Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Jeff was already booked with a destination wedding giving me the opportunity to take the lead on this beautiful wedding. I was also fortunate enough to bring along Kristyn Smith (an amazing photographer and one of my best friends) as my second shooter for the week.
From the first time I talked to Claudia and Art on Skype it felt like we were old friends. It was evident that they were a genuine, happy couple with a zest for life who just wanted the best for those around them. Their excitement for everything was always sky high, so I knew spending the week with them would be an adventure. And their “up for anything” attitude only added to our own excitement that kept building in the months leading up to the wedding.
From the minute we landed on the tiny one by seven kilometre island, we were surrounded by an explosion of colour and life. Their wedding is best described as a Venezuelan party meets Louisiana charm meets tropical island. They were married under an open expanse of palm trees, and as the sun set and was replaced by stars, they partied under those same trees intertwined with white lights, right at the water’s edge. Thankfully no rain was involved, since there was no indoor backup plan! Shooting there truly has a magical charm that’s unlike any other.
Claudia and Art wanted a week of relaxation, and the most important thing to them was that their friends and family, who had traveled from all over the world, were able to soak up authentic island living. Isla Mujeres was always a destination that they kept coming back to, so it was natural for them to get married there. It feels like home to them and they showed us all the best food, drinks and dancing in town.
Thank you for trusting Kristyn and I with your day, welcoming us into your group, and making us feel like instant friends! And if you’re curious to see more from Kristyn, be sure to check her blog post.
